Strikes
Strikes and roadblocks are frequent in Peru and can disrupt our short Inca trail to Machu Picchu hike and rail service to and from Machu Picchu. We will do our best that your hike to Machu Picchu continues as planned with some changes.
If the strike happens on the first day of your short Inca Trail tour, we will take you to Aguas Calientes the night before your start date. You will spend the night in a hotel which will be at your expense. And the next day, you will hike an extra 1 hour and a half to Km 104 where your 2-day Inca Trail tour starts.
If the strike happens the day that you finish your 2-day 1-night Inca Trail. We will send our vans to Hidrolectrica. So you will need to hike an extra 2 hours from Aguas Calientes to Hydroelectric. Then we will drive 7 hours to Cusco. We will drop you off at your hotel around 09:00 pm.
Travel Insurance
We recommend you get travel insurance because if you cancel your two-day Machu Picchu hike at the last minute it can reimburse you for your pre-paid, non-refundable short Inca Trail permit. Also when you get sick or hurt while you are far away from home, it can reimburse you for care following a covered medical emergency while traveling.
Short Inca Trail Difficulty
The Short Inca Trail is generally considered moderately difficult. Although it spans only one day of hiking, it includes steep ascents, stone steps, and high altitude, which can make the trek physically demanding for some travelers. Most hikers with a basic level of fitness can complete it comfortably, as the pace is steady and the total walking time averages 6–7 hours. The trail rewards the effort with remarkable scenery, archaeological sites, and a memorable first view of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate.
Short Inca Trail Weather
The weather is unpredictable in the Andes. The dry season in 2 days Inca Trail is from April to October and the rainy season is from November through March, but this does not stop rain from falling in the dry season or the sun from coming out in the rainy season so just be prepared. No matter what season you are hiking the short Inca Trail trek, make sure that you get rain gear such as a rain jacket, rain pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. You might experience 4 seasons in only one day too. So you must be prepared. Layers are the key since they are easy to adapt to different temperature changes. Be prepared with a down jacket since the early morning and evening will be cold.
Altitude
The highest point reached on this route is the Sun Gate, situated at approximately 2,720 meters (8,924 feet). Although this elevation is lower than the highest pass on the classic 4-day Inca Trail, it is still advisable to spend one or two days in Cusco (3,399 m / 11,152 ft) beforehand to ensure proper acclimatization.

Yes, a waiting list is available for the 2-day Inca Trail. In certain situations, additional permits may become available shortly before the departure date, typically within 2 to 3 days before the hike starts. This usually happens when travelers cancel their trips due to altitude sickness after arriving in Cusco, flight delays or cancellations, or other unexpected circumstances.
When these cancellations occur, the number of required porters may also decrease, which can occasionally free up a small number of permits. As a result, it is sometimes possible to secure a last-minute space, depending on availability.
During our 2-day Inca Trail hike, you will explore two circuit: Circuit 1 (Upper Terrace Route) and Circuit 3 (Royal Route). On the first day, you will arrive at the Sungate and hike straight to Machu Picchu, entering through the upper area via Circuit 1. From the upper terrace, you can take the famous photo of Machu Picchu. After exiting the site, you will return the next day to follow Circuit 3, which takes you through the most important temples and structures of this ancient city. Unfortunately, it is not possible. The Peruvian government doesn’t allow us to change once the two-day Inca trail permits have been bought. Short Inca Trail permits are not transferable nor refundable. The only information that the government allows us to change is passport numbers.
For our travelers hiking the Inca Trail 2-day trek, we always aim to reserve the 9:00–10:00 a.m. Huayna Picchu time slot whenever it is available.
On the second day, you will arrive at Machu Picchu at 6:00 a.m. You will then enjoy a guided tour of the citadel from 6:00 to 8:30 a.m. After the tour, you will enter Huayna Picchu at 9:00 a.m. The hike takes approximately 2.5 hours, finishing around 12:00 p.m.
Once the hike is complete, you will take the bus from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes, which takes about 30 minutes. You will arrive around 12:30 p.m., giving you enough time to enjoy lunch before your train departure at 2:25 p.m.
If the 9:00 a.m. Huayna Picchu schedule is sold out, we will reserve the 7:00–8:00 a.m. time slot instead. In this case, your guided tour of Machu Picchu will run from 6:00 to 7:30 a.m., meaning you will miss approximately 30% of the guided tour of the citadel.
Important note: Huayna Picchu tickets for the 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. schedules sell out very quickly. For this reason, we strongly recommend booking Huayna Picchu tickets in advance, together with your 2-day Inca Trail permits.

- Student Card: If you booked the Short Inca Trail as a student, you need to bring your physical student card.
- Backpack: A 25-liter backpack is recommended. You can bring a smaller or larger one as there are no restrictions on the Inca Trail. However, if your backpack is larger when visiting Machu Picchu, you’ll need to store it in a locker, for which you’ll need to pay 5 soles. The locker is safe.

- Water: It’s recommended to bring at least 2 liters of water per person.
- First Aid Kit: It’s always a good idea to have your own first aid kit. Although our guides carry one, they are not allowed to prescribe you any medicine.
- Outfit for Machu Picchu: Since you’ll want to keep photos of Machu Picchu forever, it would be a good idea to bring an extra set of clothes for the trip.
- Swimsuit (Optional): Some travelers visit the hot springs in Aguas Calientes, but they are not highly recommended as they can be crowded.
- Sun Hat: The first part of the trail is exposed to the sun, so you’ll need protection.
- Sandals: After the trek, you can switch to sandals for comfort.
- Power Bank: Since there are many beautiful spots to take pictures and videos, bring a power bank in case your phone’s battery runs out.
- Towel (Optional): The hotel will provide a towel, but you can bring your own if you prefer.

- Sunglasses: It’s often sunny on the Short Inca Trail.
- Sunblock: The sun’s rays are very strong in the Andes, so bring sunscreen.
- Insect Repellent: The entire trail is in a rainforest area, so there will be many mosquitoes the whole year, especially more in August and September.
