From Soraypampa, we will begin our hike to Humantay Lake, surrounded by stunning scenery. Early on, you’ll witness the majestic, snow-covered peaks of Salkantay and Humantay.

The trek to the lake takes about 1.5 hours. The trail starts off flat for around 20 minutes, but then continues uphill for the remainder of the hike until we reach the lake, which sits at 4,200 meters. The effort is well worth it, as the view of the lake is truly breathtaking. Once we arrive, there will be ample time to take photos, offer a tribute to the Apus, and enjoy some free time.

Afterward, we will descend back to Soraypampa, which takes about 1.5 hours and is much easier than the ascent. Upon returning, we will have lunch, and then head back to Cusco, arriving around 5:00 p.m.

The weather at Humantay Lake is highly unpredictable, making it essential to dress in layers. Early in the morning, temperatures tend to be quite cold, often requiring warm clothing to stay comfortable. However, as the day progresses, the weather can shift significantly, with the sun rising and causing the temperature to climb, resulting in much warmer conditions. Dressing in layers ensures that one can stay warm in the cool mornings and easily adjust for the warmer conditions later in the day.

The hike to Humantay Lake is widely regarded as challenging due to its steep and demanding terrain. While the initial 20 minutes of the trek offers a relatively easy walk across flat terrain, the subsequent portion of the journey becomes significantly more strenuous. For the next 1 hour and 10 minutes, hikers are required to ascend steep uphill paths, which demand considerable physical endurance and stamina. The combination of the rapid elevation gain and the rugged nature of the trail makes this hike particularly difficult, especially for those who may not be accustomed to high-altitude trekking.
